SkookumChuck Narrows, BC

This was a 2 1/2 day weekend trip to dive the narrows, one of the supposedly faster tidal exchanges in North America.  I'm told that the Kayakers love this as they can ride the perpetual wave of  up to five feet... High enough that you can't see them... Well, I've no doubt that it's true, when I went up there, I couldn't see them either... heheh... due to the HUGE Wavs... that the pics below will prove...

Anyway the dives were OK, did the Glory hole in between the islands and then whisked away, much like a bus load full of tourists, as the current were starting to flow... not as fast, at this dive, as the Colorado River, but then, over the years, what may have been a 6-8 kt dive, is definitely remembered as at least a 25kt current.. heheh just joking...

SC-FERRY copy.JPG (20273 bytes) Of course from Seattle through Vancouver to the Horseshoe Bay Ferry - 3.5 hours and get there early, then to Langdale, up PR101 to Egmont, turn off just before the next ferry at the top of the peninsula... about 5 hours driving  without delays.
...But the trip is well worth it after a long drive in anticipation of the Fabulous Ferry Food....  and the hour crossing that you can wait in line, find a seat,  woolf it down and race back to the car before the ferry docks... eg_ferryeats.JPG (23926 bytes)

...and of course the mountains of Canada.  I can only describe them as Massive.... the road off in the distance leads to Whistler Mountain.. and towards the right side is Porteau Cove somewhere... Just another Sunny Day... as they say "..we don't get tan, we just Rust.."
Proof positive that we got to the right spot... eg_welcomesgn.jpg (24784 bytes)

...and of course the Pub... the one on the left.. luckily it's a short walk back to the cabins... the beer and Rum'n Cokes can take their toll.... Hmmm maybe it because of the altitude, yeah that's it...we're so high up... just look at a map... from Seattle you have to go up... Boooo!! bad joke....
Speaking of Cabins, they were actually quite nice - solid wood beamed with kids lofts, small bath and kitchenette and futons.. small fireplace, would make a nice getaway? if the tides were running so you'd have something to do... eg_cabinwtr.jpg (34539 bytes)
eg_boatpassng.jpg (32619 bytes) Well enough of the touristie stuff... here's the narrows, this is a mild version of the current.. (the REAL current - tidal exchange - happened at midnight... heheh or so I'm told)  Anyway, we dove on the back side of the island there somewhere... as I said, just passing through.. Water Vis was about 20' or so... at best...
This is the staging area... sorry no pic of the boat, one of the drawbacks of Amateur status tour guides... we just go off the back - to your right side.. plenty of room, Captain was great...etc.... just dive then go back to the restaurant - eat - then back on the boat.. for the second dive...  eg_diversboat.jpg (27549 bytes)

Just a pic on the new landscape camera... this is just around the bend from the resort....

The hike to view the Tidal Exchange of HUGE WAVES, takes about an hour of easy somewhat  level walking.. about 2.5 miles over and back... suggest you check the tides to make it worth the hike.. or bring your flashlights if the "Massive Exchange...!!! " is at midnight  This is the best I could do - I hired a helicopter and flew over at just the right time.... or??? took a pic  of the Parks bill board... heheh you tell me.... at least I didn't get any "Red Eye" in the photos... eg_billboard.jpg (32688 bytes)
Ok, that's about it for now... It was beautiful up there, weather was perfect, only a few misquitoes, warm.... yada-yada-yada... but I will say one thing.... It's definitely a lotta work for..... a BEER !!!!...

Have a good one....
